Breathe Better. Grow Stronger. Smile Brighter!

At Lodi Orthodontics, we believe a healthy smile starts with healthy breathing. That’s why we take an airway-centered approach to orthodontics — especially for our growing patients. By identifying signs of airway issues early, we can customize treatment plans that not only align teeth but also support proper facial development, sleep, and overall well-being.

Early Orthodontics and Airway Development

A constricted airway can significantly affect a child’s health and development and is often overlooked. That’s why our doctors evaluate the airway of every young patient.

If a child under the age of 12 shows signs of a restricted airway, Dr. Chai or Dr. Mau may recommend early (Phase One) orthodontic treatment designed to guide jaw growth, expand the palate, and create space not only for permanent teeth, but also for healthier breathing. This airway-focused approach can reduce the risk of future issues like obstructive sleep apnea, chronic mouth breathing, and poor sleep quality.

Signs your child may have an underdeveloped or constricted airway:

  • Snoring or noisy breathing at night
  • Mouth-breathing during the day or while sleeping
  • Grinding their teeth
  • Bedwetting beyond the typical age
  • Difficulty concentrating or paying attention
  • Frequent mood swings or behavioral issues

Early treatment is most effective when coordinated with a child’s natural growth. By identifying airway issues early, we can often prevent more serious problems down the road—and help your child breathe, sleep, and thrive.

what is a palatal expander?

A palatal expander is a gentle, orthodontic device used to widen the upper jaw. This treatment is especially effective in children and pre-teens while their bones are still developing. By expanding the upper jaw, we can:

  • Create space for crowded or misaligned teeth
  • Improve the airway and nasal breathing
  • Help the upper and lower jaws fit together properly
  • Support a balanced facial structure

Our approach: our doctors design every expander to suit your child’s unique anatomy, using 3D scans and digital planning for precise, comfortable results.
